Fall 2011 Trend: Black Tie

The borrowed-from-the-boys look is a classic. There is simply nothing so feminine as a woman in masculine clothing—and owning it. The contrast is a simple, stunning look that has designers resurrecting it season after season. This season there is a twist to the menswear style, with inspiration being taken from the tuxedo or the le smoking (if you ask Yves Saint Laurent) on the runways of The Row, Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung, Rebecca Minkoff, and Ruffian.

To get the look you can go classic with a tuxedo blazer, pants or shirt (just not all together), or go high-fashion with a bow tie. Of course, you can channel the look less literally with all black and a white top for a modern, graphic black and white outfit. The trick for pulling off the trend is not to take it too seriously. Pair a pair of tuxedo pants with a worn in tee and heels, or a tuxedo jacket with skinny jeans. Wear a bow tie with a mini skirt and grandpa cardigan, or add a feminine touch to a tuxedo shirt with a frothy chiffon skirt.
