Winter Olympic Stories

Athletes from around the world are competing in the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The IOC limits the winter games to sports performed on snow or ice, but this includes a huge variety of activities. There are so many sports that everyone is bound to find one they enjoy watching.

Men’s figure skating was very dramatic. The favorite, Yuzuru Hanyu, had won the gold medal in Sochi four years before, but he had a devastating ankle injury in November. He was only able to practice his routines fully for two weeks before the competition. He is like a rock star to his fans, who shower the ice with Winnie the Pooh bears after his performances. Perhaps because he had such unconditional fan support, he won again with dazzling short and freestyle programs.

Chloe Kim is the 17 year old girl from California that won the women’s snowboard half-pipe. She made twisting and flipping through the air look easy. But don’t try this at home. She started training at 4 and dedicated years to perfecting her moves.

I’m sure there are other stars to discover this winter. The personal stories of the athletes include the sacrifices it takes to be world class. Don’t miss the opportunity to appreciate their accomplishments. Make yourself a mug of hot cocoa and tune in!
