 Christopher Kane's collection for JBrand.
Yesterday morning, Barneys hosted a breakfast in honor of Christopher Kane’s new denim collection for JBrand—a handful of faded neon flares, skinnies, shorts and jackets. We were served oatmeal in the sleek new Gene’s, the 8th floor cafe in the middle of the freshly re-vamped Co-Op in which each place setting comes with a mesmerizing interactive screen. Unfortunately, Kane’s Scottish accent is impossible to transcribe, so here’s what we learned—from memory!
1. Kane’s favorite American food is French Fries, “They’re American, right?”
2. He loves American TV, specifically True Blood and The Walking Dead, which he has to fast forward because he’s terrified of zombies.
3. He thinks Kate Middleton’s amazing, but wishes she’d take advantage of her position and mix more designer into her high street wardrobe. When asked if he wished she’d wear Chris Kane he said, “Sure,” but really meant that in general she should be more like Michelle Obama, sartorially speaking.
4. He’s trying to introduce more casual basics into his mainline, like t-shirts, sweaters and denim, all of which do well for the line in stores.
5. He thinks denim must be the most used fabric, and has loved experimenting with it both on the runway and in collaboration with JBrand.
6. As for the pressure designers feel these days, to produce four collections each year as well as collaborate with mass brands and develop a strong brand identity, he thinks it’s a good thing. He works well under pressure and says he lives for his work.
