ElleGirl- Coachella may be one of the biggest music festivals of the year, but this event isn’t just about the tunes. Every year, concert attendees don their most out-there boho threads to rock out to their favorite bands, and celebs are no exception. Coachella newbies Emma Watson and Nina Dobrev and regulars Kate Bosworth and Vanessa Hudgens all flooded the polo fields in Indio, CA in their music festival finest. We’ve rounded up our favorite looks from this past weekend below, and since the festival has been extended to two weekends, you can expect to see even more funky outfits this coming Friday.

Lizzie McGuire’s Hilary Duff’s a mom! The 24-year-old actress and her hubbie Mike Comrie welcomed their baby boy named Luca Cruz Comrie on Tuesday. Us Weekly. Even the White House Staff appreciates a good mani-pedi: Luxury cosmetics line Le Metier de Beaute was reportedly paid by the Obama campaign to release a collection of Obama branded polishes—in red, white, and blue of course. ELLE. American Idol is getting a makeover: First Tommy Hilfiger joined the show as “image advisor,” and now Idol is debuting a new clothing line, Authentic Icon (AI), in partnership with Kohl’s. People Stylewatch. If you’re dying to shop that favorite overseas boutique online, you may be in luck: The new website Shoptiques allows readers to do just that (it even cleverly organizes the shops by neighborhood!). Paris, anyone? Stylecaster. If you’re wondering what Mischa Barton’s been doing since The O.C., she’s been trying to break into the fashion industry. After launching a line of handbags in 2008, Barton is now releasing a new line of apparel, cosmetics, accessories, and bath products called “Mischa’s Place.” Huffington Post.

- So many things have been going on lately in between all the Fashion Week craziness! Right before Fashion Week started, I was very honored to be selected as a judge for the fashion and jewelry division of the Scholastic Awards for Arts and Writing. It’s such a great award program because it’s the only national program that showcases children with artistic talent, not just athletic or intellect abilities. Needless to say, I was really blown away by the level of talent and creativity from all the students. It was hard to decide who would move forward, but luckily I had some great help from my fellow two judges—one a head designer at Natori and the other a head at FIT—and I felt extremely confident in our choices! It’s great to see students take an interest in fashion at such a young age. I was really into art in high school, and I did a little sewing on the side, but I really didn’t learn garment construction until college. It would have been so helpful if I’d started a little younger, so I was really impressed at the students’ level of skill. I would recommend taking sewing classes in high school to any student that has any interest in going in fashion.
I also headed down to Philadelphia the week after Fashion Week to do a segment on Good Day Philadelphia and judge a competition for Rowenta at Drexel University. The competition was inspired by a yet-to-be-released iron, and I can’t wait to share all the designs with you as soon as it becomes available! Again, I was really inspired by the student’s talent. The Good Day Philadelphia segment was a lot of fun but also a little stressful. Live television is never “relaxed,” especially when you have a limited amount of time! The whole segment idea was about making small alterations to an old bridesmaid dress you have to make it wearable for future events. Luckily, I got to start out with a cute bridesmaid dress, but you can take these tips and apply them to any formal dress—prom, homecoming, etc.—you own, no matter how horrible! The three main tips that I recommend are adding straps, adding a belt, and shortening the hem. Adding the straps makes the garment a little less dressy and a lot more functional. The belt will break up the dress and hide the waist ruching that is usually very common in those times of dresses. Shortening the hem keeps it younger, and you can also set the length at a height that is flattering to your legs. I would recommend using a Rowenta steam station as a one stop shop because it had a powerful iron for when your are setting the hem but also has the steam capabilities that is needed for the material of the dress. Courtesy of Viktor Luna Season after season we continue to see Project Runway designers make impressive marks at New York Fashion Week. Mexico-born Viktor Luna, a finalist from last season, sent futuristic prints down the spring 2012 runway during the show’s Season 9 finale. For fall, Luna showcased his signature designs in a presentation styled by ANTM’s veteran judge Nolé Marin. The 31-year-old emerging designer embraced his rock-girl aesthetic throughout this collection. As a Fashion Institute of Technology graduate, Luna’s design background is apparent in his sharp blazers, and polished leathers and furs that are all tailored to perfection. His contrasting color palette of black onyx and rich textiles accentuated the collection’s silk-screened bottoms as if they were taken directly out of a work of art. The collection—with its edgy kaleidoscopic prints—is a solid sneak peek at what the most stylish personalities will be wearing this fall, or year-round for that matter. We can’t wait to see what’s next on the horizon for Luna!

Polka dots were made famous with Minnie Mouse’s red spotted dress and bow, and now the print is popping up everywhere, from the runways to the art galleries. Marc Jacobs, Lanvin, and Diane von Furstenberg are just a few of the many designers who went dotty in their fall/winter collections, and British artist Damien Hirst recently installed his series of spot paintings in all of the Gagosian galleries. This trend is very easy to wear—just one polka-dotted piece will pull together your look with spot-on style. Check out Taylor Swift (left) leaving Toast recently in L.A. The country singer looks chic and sophisticated in a polka dot Dolce & Gabbana dress. Swift opted for the classic black and white color combo, but the festive print comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. See spots this season with these polka dot pieces:

- Select stars hit the purple carpet on Tuesday night dressed in their finest costumes for the 14th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA. For a ceremony that celebrates the year’s most innovative costuming in TV and film, celebs kept their carpet looks relatively low-key, letting the style savvy nominees steal the show. Some went for a monochrome look, some opted for classic elegance, some sported color (Rooney Mara!), and one even rocked fluorescent pink highlights. There’s not much we can say that’s already been said about this brooding babe. Last night was the L.A. premiere of Taylor Kitsch’s new movie, John Carter, so clearly he holds ELLEgirl’s title of Crush of the Lifetime Week. The 30-year-old Canadian actor is best known for his role as Tim Riggins, the troubled heartthrob/heart breaker on the highly-praised (though not nearly enough appreciated) high school football drama Friday Night Lights. If you’re a fan of the show, you’ll recall that Dillon Panthers Quarterback #33 had little to no lines in the first season (the epitome of the strong, silent type) before evolving into a central character on the show. We welcomed that transition with open arms, just as we welcome Kitsch’s shift from the small screen to the silver screen.
Courtesy of Disney The epic sci-fi tale of John Carter—hitting theaters in 3D March 9th—is based on a character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs 100 years ago. Kitsch plays John Carter, a jaded soldier who’s transported to the middle of a Martian civil war. In filming the action-adventure movie, which also stars Lynn Collins, Kitsch has endured “some groin tears, to high ankle sprains, some good cuts.” Groin tears? Yikes. But in the end, he says of the film: “Visually, it’s going to be incredible.” We won’t argue with that. Kitsch is also appearing in upcoming films Battleship and Savages. (On the rumored FNL movie, Kitsch has “no idea what’s going on” and, sadly to us, admits to Access Hollywood that if he had his way, he wouldn’t reprise his role as Rigs on the big screen.) Before Hollywood fame, Kitsch worked as a personal trainer as well as a model for Diesel and Abercrombie & Fitch—neither of which are surprising. But did you know he’s also certified as a nutritionist? Hot and healthy.

- Back to NYC and back to reality! One of the highlights of the trip was meeting the author of Dreaming of Chanel, Charlotte Smith. In her book, she writes about the priceless inheritance of a vintage clothing collection every girl dreams of. From Chanel to Vivienne Westwood and Valentino, she captures the gorgeous dresses and the stories behind the fabulous women that wore them. It was hard not to be in awe of her as we all intently listened to her stories.

Alice + Olivia fall 2012, Imaxtree Alice + Olivia met Alice in Wonderland at this week’s fall 2012 presentation, one of quirkiest of New York Fashion Week. Models embraced each corner of the playful studio with looks that left attendees—including Kevin Jonas and his wife Danielle Jonas, Gossip Girl’s Kelly Rutherford, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Kristin Chenoweth, and Smash’s Megan Hilty—in a whimsical mood. Glasses of champagne, Magnum ice cream bars, and custom A+O “Nolita” cocktails danced their way around the floor as guests mingled and captured close-ups of the doll-faced models. Designer Stacey Bendet created a line that had something for every Alice + Olivia girl. From body-con sequin gowns that bellowed down to the floor for the glamorous A+O girl to the lace-loving Parisian and of course the tulle-devoted princess.

As New York Fashion Week continues on, new trends are unveiled for fall 2012 that offer a breath of fresh air from seasons past. Leather, military influences, and, most of all, fur (hats, coats, tops—you name it) have all had a strong presence on many of the runways. Taking a break from traditional autumn hues like black, green, and plum, bold orange shades have also graced many designer collections. As for dresses and skirts, most fashion houses have opted to bring it down a notch—length-wise, that is. Models kept chic and sophisticated in knee-length designs by Nicole Miller and Costello Tagliapietra. Check out the most popular trends emerging from NYFW below.
1. Fur detailing

Fur continues to pop up all over the runways in new and different ways: colorful statement coats, vests, and even peplums.
2. Elbow-length leather gloves

While this accessory may seem like a relic of ages past, NYFW thinks it’s due for a comeback. Wear these gloves either with cropped sleeves or a sleeveless dress—we love the outerwear/bare skin combo.
3. Orange
Karen Walker and Rebecca Minkoff; Imaxtree
Finally—some color! While black and white are dominating NYFW, many designers are using orange to bring a pop of color into their collections. Designs range from darker hues to bright patterns, so expect to incorporate at least one of these shades into next season’s wardrobe.
4. Military chic
Alexander Wang and Jason Wu; Imaxtree
Sir, yes sir! Many designers have added military touches to their designs, including structured shoulders, epaulets, and big buttons—all with a feminine twist.
5. Knee-length dresses
Nicole Miller and Costello Tagliapietra; Imaxtree
The longer the better: most collections have dropped the mini look in favor of more elegant, knee-length designs.
