She was born Augusta Ada Byron and was the only legitimate child of the poet Lord Byron. She is best known for her work on Charles Babbage's early mechanical computer, the analytical engine. She is sometimes portrayed as the "world's first computer programmer". The computer language Ada, created on behalf of the United States Department of Defense, was named after Lovelace.
