Advocating For Those on the Autism Spectrum

Prije 61 mjeseca

Welcome back!

Autism awareness is in focus this month. Along this theme, I decided to collect information from people living on the Autism spectrum from various sources regarding what we can do to make their lives easier. Please note that those who I gathered information from do not have the same needs and experiences as everyone on the Autism spectrum.

Listen.

People on the Autism spectrum can often feel like they are being silenced due to a multitude of factors such as being misrepresented, mistreated, or ignored. Make sure you listen to them when it comes to what you can do to help.

Only give advice when asked.

Many people on the spectrum people are tired of hearing tips on how to ‘fix’ themselves. This is never okay to do -- be mindful of what you say and how it may sound.

Make yourself approachable.

Sometimes, those on the Autism spectrum lose friends and are bullied due to the ignorance of the people they are surrounded by. If you know someone that is on the spectrum, be the person that will never join in with the bullying, speak against bullying, and be easy to talk to.

Be open to learning more about the topic.

It is extremely difficult to fully understand something you have not experienced. I am currently not claiming to know everything about Autism -- and we should all continue to educate ourselves where we can in order to be more sensitive to those with it.

Sending lots of love to the dolls living on (and loving those living on) the Autism spectrum,

~Jaya x
