Sunny Bunny's Harajuku style: Mori Girl

17 maanden geleden

Style tips from our friends at  ElectricAlice who run a great blog and concept store in Australia dedicated to the wild energy of Japanese street fashion – here are some style notes to check out in conjunction with the latest  colection in Sunny Bunny Kloz

If you were to arrive in Harajuku today, the style you would notice
the most girls wearing is definitely Mori Girl! Mori girl seems to
have emerged in defiance of the shiny, hyper-saturated, candy-coloured
perfection of other Japanese street styles – and it's taking over
Tokyo by storm, with loads of Mori Girl shops, magazines, cafés and
events popping up to cater to the trend.

Mori means “forest” and it’s easy to see why this label was applied,
because these girls do look as if they’ve worn a beautiful frilly
outfit into the woods and have emerged a few years later having worn
it nearly to shreds, just like Miss Havisham in Charles Dickens’
classic novel Great Expectations. It is all about layering together
aging lace, crochet, soft cottons, knits, leather and other “natural”
fabrics to create a sweet feminine look that’s a bit rough around the
edges. Make-up is kept simple, and hairstyles are either left messy
and natural, or incorporate classical braids and loose buns. Well-worn
leather boots, ratty scarves, antique jewelry and straw hats are also
common.

Mori Girl probably has such a strong appeal because it is so
comfortable to wear, and is so easy to put together using old and
rejected clothing – even if it's falling apart at the seams! It also
appears to symbolize a rejection of Japan's high-tech culture with its
preference for cutesy hand-made objects, old-fashioned hobbies like
polaroid photography, and non-perfect appearance. It's an easy look to
try for yourself – you can probably start by layering together some
old clothes you've forgotten about! And the popularity of vintage
stores means you can easily shop for some "new" pieces with that
well-worn look. Then all you need is to slop on a pair of rugged boots
and forget about washing your hair for a week – it's as easy as that.
No wonder it's so popular in today's busy society!
