Photo: Getty ImagesEveryone who’s on social networking sites shares the same inside joke: “It’s not official until it’s Facebook official.” Or “You changed your relationship status—whoa, big step!” Well, whether or not you view someone’s status as a symbol of a serious relationship, we can probably all agree that sharing private information—like passwords to your Facebook account, email, or phone—with another person is nothing to be taken lightly. According to a recent article in the New York Times, that’s exactly what many teen couples are doing. More than ever before, it’s become a sort of trend for couples to share passwords as sign of trust or to show how serious they are about their relationship. A 2011 survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that 30 percent of teens who spend time online have shared a password with a friend, boyfriend, or girlfriend, and that girls are almost twice as likely as boys to disclose the info. The natural inclination is to think that if you’re dating someone seriously, you share everything with that person. No secrets. So, whether it’s a conscious or subconscious act, girlfriends and boyfriends swap passwords to show the other that “Look, I’ve got nothing to hide from you. You can trust me.” Ironic, isn’t it? If there’s really trust in a relationship, you’d think that there wouldn’t be a need to disclose passwords in the first place. And obviously, there’s a chance that things could go awry. Beyond the fact that knowing your guy’s password to his Facebook, email, or phone is an easy formula for paranoia and obsessively checking up on him, what happens if there’s a breakup? You can change a password, but you can’t change what your ex now knows about you from all that access to your online accounts. So what do you think? The Edwardian-era’s favorite hue has made its comeback on the heels of Downton Abbey’s second season premiere, though its current revival came in a series of thoroughly modern silhouettes ranging from fishtail to tea-length skirts, mermaid-hems to feather dusters. While Best Actress nominee, Charlize Theron swanned in voluminous Dior couture (go Gaytten!), Kristen Wiig took the rock star’s girlfriend approach in a laid back Bill Blass column. Katherine McPhee, star of the upccoming NBC musical theater drama Smash, took to the carpet in curve-hugging, custom-made Donna Karan and Jessica Biel got tablecloth lacey in an Elie Saab gown that evoked a sense of the rural Midwest. The look is back this winter as a great way to add a glam pop to any outfit. If you’re like us, you don’t have $216 to spend on a pair of embellished tights—luckily, a tight budget’s never stopped an ELLEgirl. Whether you like your tights ripped to the point of destruction, or sweet and girlie, you can make this look work for you with our DIY guide, inspired by some of the best fashion bloggers out there. You’ll need: a pair of tights, a needle and thread, and embellishments of your choice: our favorites are sequins, seed beads, and rhinestones. You can also use lace trim (the kind you find at craft stores), silk flowers, or cut outs from a different garment.

It’s much easier to sew when you’re wearing them, and you won’t have to worry about your beads or gems tearing off when the tights stretch to fit your legs. (Hint: If you decide to unleash your DIY skills on a pair of plain tights, you can add your embellishments at random. If you want to use a pair that come with a pattern, sew onto the thickest part of the design.)

Hold you embellishment in place and slide your needle through the hole(s), securing it onto your tights. Thread the needle back through the whole(s) and tie a strong double knot. (Hint: If you’re sewing on beads or sequins, you’ll want to attach them in clusters of four or five at a time, tying your knot after you’ve secured each cluster.)

Hold your crystal in place and thread your needle through the hole(s) and your tights, securing them in place. Loop the thread around each crystal at least twice, since they are heavier and make smaller clusters of about two or three. (Hint: Don’t sew your embellishments on places where your legs are likely to brush, like the inner thigh, knee, and ankle area.)

Don’t worry if the legs aren’t perfectly symmetrical, half the appeal of this style comes from the whimsical, free-spirit feel. After you’re pleased with the level of bling, slide on your one-of-a-kind tights and be prepared to share the steps with admirers.

Bioré Twenty-year-old Shailene Woodley, star of ABC’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager, dazzled critics with her role as the eldest daughter in a troubled family in The Descendants, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She also dazzled everyone who caught a glimpse of her on the red carpet before the event. We got an exclusive look into the mind of Shailene’s makeup artist Gloria Noto, who told us how she worked with Shailene to produce her fresh, bright glow and how you can get the same look at home. How did you and Shailene decide on the makeup for the evening, and how did her dress and personality play a role? We decided on the look as a whole team. Myself, hair, wardrobe, and of course, Shai, all had a fun meeting looking over makeup and hair looks in books and online. Then, of course, Shai’s personality and what she likes are truly what decides. Before anything else—dress, trends, etc.—I wanted Shai to feel like her beautiful self. Did Shailene have any special requests when you two were figuring out the makeup? Yes! Shai knows who she is, in and out, which I admire so much. She knows things about herself that she loves to emphasize, like her skin and eyes. She always loves to have a subtle contour on her cheekbones but likes everything else to be clean. She also loves mascara. She wanted to achieve a look that appeared to be easy and light, yet flawless for the red carpet. She didn’t want to look too made-up, since her dress was such a huge statement. What products did you use to achieve the look? On her skin, I used Biore’s new Combination Skin Balancing Cleanser. I love it because it cleanses oily skin without stripping the drier areas. Then I added a natural moisturizer to prep her face for makeup. Next, I used a tinted foundation that had a light, dewy finish. On the eyes I used the Chanel Mystic Eyes Eyeshadow Quad. This quad has neutral grey and pewter tones that gives a beautiful defused look. I buffed Chanel Rouge Coco lip color in Destinee on her lips to give a subtle plum stain, then applied the Chanel Rouge Coco Lip Baume on top. I used the Rose Marie Swift cream highlighter on her cheekbones and her inner eyes to add a soft glow. Black Chanel mascara was used on her top and bottom lashes. A translucent powder was applied down the center of her face so she wouldn’t look overly dewy. Did you give Shailene any products to tuck away in her purse for touch-ups? The only thing I gave Shai was the Chanel Lip Baum to hydrate her pout, and a disposable mascara wand to brush her eyebrows right before she exited her car and stepped onto the red carpet.

In this weekend’s New York Times story about Hollywood’s “power stylists” there’s a little nugget of interesting news: Kate Bosworth is working on a denim collection with her stylist, Cher Coulter. It’s the second design venture for Bosworth and Coulter. The two kicked off the Mint craze with JewelMint, their monthly jewelry club that sells layerable, feminine costume jewelry at crazy reasonable prices and spawned the Olsens’ BeachMint and Rachel Bilson’s ShoeMint. Last week, JewelMint premiered the first in a series of videos showcasing its collection, shot by Bosworth’s boyfriend, Michael Polish. Since the denim collection is in the works, there’s no word on whether it will launch as a Mint venture, or a totally separate entity, but anything Bosworth touches—fashion wise—seems to turn to gold.

Who knew New York would prove to the be the least stubborn fashion capital? The almost year-long debate over which spring 2013 fashion week would be when has finally ended thanks to New York’s decision (and London’s agreement) to move their shows up by a week. The catfight started when New York and London claimed a calendar decision made three years ago in a meeting of the four fashion councils was in fact a three year agreement. Milan claimed otherwise and refused to push their show dates later in September. As a result, Milan and London would have overlapped by three days—one publishing company went so far as to reprimand Milan by swearing none of their editors would attend the city’s major shows. Thankfully, that’s been avoided. The dates will be as follows: New York Fashion Week, September 6 through September 13; London Fashion Week September 14 through September 18; Milan Fashion Week, September 18 through September 25, and Paris Fashion Week will run from September 25 through October 2. Steven Kolb, the CFDA’s CEO gave Milan a slight slap on the wrist through his praise of New York and London in today’s WWD, “People are anxious and need to know the dates. There’s no value for the cities to compete. In the spirit of working together, London and New York are in agreement that we will go in the earlier period, but with the hope that the four cities will come out of this confusion and work together to plan future show weeks. We need to begin to look at the fashion season not as individual fashion weeks, but very much as a global business.”

Michelle Williams had a Marilyn moment of her own when she stopped by “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” last week, turning heads in a smart and chic Jason Wu frock as she promoted her new Monroe biopic, My Week With Marilyn. Williams charmed the audience with tales of how she prepared for the role of the troubled 1950s sex symbol, and her outfit was just as praiseworthy as her convincing performance in the film. The actress looked clean-cut in a stunning peplum dress from Jason Wu’s Spring 2012 collection, paired with Fendi patent leather bow-front pumps. Williams wore minimal accessories and let the Swarovski elements on her dress provide all the sparkle and shine. Her makeup was sweet and simple as well: a berry color on her lips and orange polish on her fingernails. A touch of heavy mascara on her lashes added a bit of boldness.
